News summary — COP26 Day 1

The COP26 is the largest international event of its kind ever to be held in the UK with more than 25,000 delegates arriving in the city of Glasgow - including world leaders, opinion formers, and business giants. It will work to prevent global temperatures rising above 1.5C and protect our planet and people from the impacts of climate change.

The UK has already achieved notable successes. Around 70% of the world’s economy is now covered by net zero targets, up from less than 30% when the UK took on the Presidency of COP26.

After a year-long delay, the UN Climate Summit COP26 in Glasgow has finally taken off. Here are some of today's highlights:

  • Sir David Attenborough set a hopeful tone for COP26. Read more about it and watch his powerful speech.
  • President Erdogan of Turkey, backed out of the summit at the last minute, with no explanation.
  • Ingmar Rentzhog, CEO of We Don't Have Time, asked a question to the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven about fossil-fuel subsidies. The conversation resulted in a climate warning.
  • Prime Minister Imran Khan has skipped the global climate summit COP26 commencing in Glasgow, United Kingdom, due to the critical domestic situation.
  • Pakistan has been represented in the summit by Adviser to PM on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam along with a high-level delegation. Amin Aslam would deliver a keynote address at the summit.
